Ludwigsburg Horse Fair
Ludwigsburger Pferdemarkt
May 23 - 25, 2025
Horses are the stars of the traditional Ludwigsburger Pferdemarkt, the Ludwigsburg Horse Fair. For more than 250 years, this annual festival has been a highlight of the calendar here. Although horses and equestrian events are still the focus, there is so much more on offer: dachshund races, a funfair and an arts and crafts market. As for food, expect taste treats galore.
The horse in history
The highlight of the Ludwigsburg Horse Fair is the historical pageant, a cavalcade of fine horses and riders, elegant horse-drawn carriages and rustic farm wagons, aristocrats and a bugle band, with everyone dressed in period costume. The parade covers the equine history of the city, from the Baroque era to the present day – with plenty of music, such as brass bands.
Horse lovers spend hours watching the judging for ‘best in show’ for categories ranging from tiny Shetland ponies to impressive draft horses, which still deliver beer on special occasions. And children love the pony rides and the chance to pet a horse.
Always fascinating are the bird-of-prey displays. Youngsters, who sign up for the children's falconry course, learn how to train birds of prey and even get to hold one themselves!
Dachshund races? Yes! Cheer the competitors as they hurtle to the finish line. Some “sausage” dogs are amazingly speedy! Everyone loves the fairground, with its bumper cars, thrill rides, carousel and Ferris wheel, with great views of Ludwigsburg from the top. At the arts and crafts market, artisans at work provide a master class of old-fashioned skills. Watch a blacksmith at work. Learn about the intricacies of splicing, tying and knotting from a rope maker.
